Anybody remember the Dodge Ram? We certainly do, but it’s been over a decade since Ram Trucks, better known simply as RAM, became its own brand separate from Dodge. Dodge focused on the utility vehicles, while RAM would be exclusively a pickup truck brand. We’ve mentioned before that we don’t often dabble in these value pickup truck brands, but occasionally we’ll see a special edition version of a RAM pickup truck pass through our inventory here in North Miami Beach FL, so we thought we’d take a look at the different possibilities.
When RAM first became its own brand, the Dodge Dakota was still available. It remained known as the Dodge Dakota until its discontinuation in 2011, but it was technically a member of the RAM lineup. With the resurgence of midsize pickup trucks in recent years, its possible the Dakota might return to the RAM lineup in the future. Until then, there are three main pickup trucks available from the RAM brand: the RAM 1500, RAM 2500 and RAM 3500. The RAM 1500 is the main pickup truck made by the brand. It’s a full-size, light-duty model that has been around since all the way back in 1981 when it was still known as the Dodge Ram. It has had plenty of special editions through the years, with the most recent ones coming in its fourth and current generation. They include the R/T, Urban Concept, Rebel and Warlock. There was also, briefly, a plug-in hybrid electric version of the RAM 1500. The RAM 2500 and RAM 3500 are heavy-duty versions of the 1500. They’re very similar, but pack in more power and capabilities for those jobs that need more than a traditional RAM 1500 can offer.
