The 911 has an extensive history dating back to 1963. For most of that time, the 911s had air-cooled engines, but this changed to water-cooled from 1998 onward. Unless you’re a collector, the 911 models you’re likely looking for will fall under the water-cooled category. Many of the more modern versions of the 911 that you’ll see are in the 7th generation of the 911, referred to as the 991 (an internal designation that still refers to the 911). Standard 911 Carrera models swapped out the naturally aspirated engines for turbochargers during this time, beginning in 2016, resulting in superb performance compared to prior models.
