Will Smith\u2019s \u201cMiami\u201d — An Appreciation<\/h2>\n

In the simpler days of 1997, when MTV\u2019s Total Request Live<\/em> was enjoying its hottest heat, Will Smith came along with an unforgettable number called \u201cMiami.\u201d It incorporated many of his family-friendly rhymes, won a VMA Award for \u201cBest Male Music Video,\u201d and the video in question featured an early appearance from his future Hitch<\/em> costar Eva Mendes. It still stands as Will\u2019s finest work. So, since it\u2019s Friday — and Prestige Imports knows a little something about the weekend — let\u2019s pour out a little love for \u201cMiami,\u201d a song that will be stuck in your head until Monday. Namely, what makes it so exceptional in the first place?<\/p>\n

1) The Whole Point of the Video is Escaping the Cold for our Sunny Shores.<\/h3>\n

At the start of the video, Will and some friends are eating at a diner in Philly. (If you don\u2019t know where Will was \u201cborn and raised,\u201d feel free to move along to our inventory<\/a>.) It\u2019s blustery and snowy outside, and Will and his friends — all draped in the finest late-\u201990s puffy jackets — realize that \u201cJack Frost done lost his mind.\u201d A trip to Miami is in order.<\/p>\n

2) After a Flight on a Private Jet, He Gets into — What Else — a Bentley.<\/h3>\n

We all know Will to be a man of exceptional taste. We also know he loves cars, as evidenced by his other tracks \u201cJust Cruisin\u2019\u201d and \u201cPump Ya Brakes.\u201d So, fresh off a jet that, let\u2019s just say, doesn\u2019t have a coach section, he knows what vehicle to drive. And it doesn\u2019t hurt that his Bentley\u2019s license plate says \u201cWILLYSTYLE.\u201d He must know someone at the DMV to get all of those letters on there. Did we mention that we sell Bentleys?<\/p>\n

3) Then, We Meet Eva.<\/h3>\n

Eva, as you might be aware, is a Miami native. According to IMDB, her first acting credits came in 1998, appearing in an episode of ER<\/em> and in the direct-to-video Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror<\/em>. At least one year earlier, however, she welcomes Will to South Beach with an unforgettable \u201cBienvenido aMiami.\u201d In the coming years, she teams up with Denzel Washington twice (Training Day<\/em> and Out of Time<\/em>), and by 2005, she\u2019s in Hitch <\/em>with Denzel’s pal Will<\/a>. If you thought this video wasn\u2019t influential, Eva Mendes would have a word with you, if she wasn\u2019t so busy being fabulous.<\/p>\n

4) After a Stroll on South Beach, a Boat Ride<\/h3>\n

Will strolls along the Art Deco hotels of Ocean Drive, enjoys about a dozen costume changes, and then decides a change of scenery is in order. Next we know, he\u2019s racing to a conga party (listen closely, and Gloria Estefan makes an audio appearance). Following a nod to some other cities — As for LA and Philly, \u201cThey jiggy.\u201d — and a Sly Stallone name-drop, he\u2019s ready to call it a night…on the beach \u2018til the break of dawn.
